“Because love is an act of courage, not of fear, love is a commitment to others. No matter where the oppressed are found, the act of love is commitment to their cause--the cause of liberation.”-Paulo Freire
I am AveMagnolia is a play, dance, illustrated novel, academic research as well as participatory curriculum. Magnolia In My Womb is the illustrated series of visual arts pieces and the personal novel, belonging to the larger project, which is to be a living document and interactive curriculum based on community engagement and participatory research. The project seeks to explore and illustrate the inextricable interplay of personal trauma and systemic oppression, drawing connections between the impact of oppressive systems in the biology, chemistry, neurology and physiology of the individual and how these impacts play out interpersonally and translate into further systemic reverberations. A study of how trauma has shaped our sociopolitical, economic, health and education systems and our relationship to identity and relationship itself presented in a deeply personal as well as intellectual context.
